Thyroid growth and its relationship to metamorphosis in Rana temporaria.

چکیده

INTRODUCTION In a previous work on pronephric degeneration, larvae of Rana temporaria from practically the whole range of the metamorphic cycle were studied (Fox, 1962). Metamorphosis in anurans is dependent upon the presence of a functional thyroid gland (Kollros, 1951; Lynn & Wachowski, 1951; Etkin, 1964), and the same specimens have now been used to investigate thyroid growth and development quantitatively and qualitatively, especially in relation to those major events which occur at the metamorphic climax between stages 49 and 54 (Cambar & Marrot, 1954). It will be shown that in larvae from 16 mm long (stage 41; see Fox, 1962) until practically the end of the climax (stage > 53), thyroid cells are of stable volume (about 700 /A), and thyroid enlargement is by cellular proliferation and vesicular expansion. The maximum rate of thyroid growth occurs between 16 mm and 28 mm (stages 41-45).

Effects of Ethinylestradiol and the Fungicide Prochloraz on Metamor- phosis and Thyroid Gland Morphology in Rana temporaria

Several environmental xenobiotics have been found to affect the metamorphosis of amphibians. In this study we exposed tadpoles of the Common frog Rana temporaria from hatching to metamorphosis to two known endocrine disruptors, the estrogenic pharmaceutical 17 -ethinylestradiol and the antiandrogenic/antiestrogenic fungicide prochloraz to determine their effect on 1) days to metamorphosis and s...

Microevolution and maternal effects on tadpole Rana temporaria growth and development rate

Can variation in egg size explain the local variation in tadpole growth and development of the common frog Rana temporaria or are other mechanisms, e.g. microevolution, involved? To study this, tadpoles were raised in outdoor tanks. Each tank housed tadpoles from one clutch. Eggs were collected during 2 years from six different ponds and their sizes were measured. Large eggs gave rise to tadpol...

Mobile phone mast effects on common frog (Rana temporaria) tadpoles: the city turned into a laboratory.

An experiment has been made exposing eggs and tadpoles of the common frog (Rana temporaria) to electromagnetic radiation from several mobile (cell) phone antennae located at a distance of 140 meters. The experiment lasted two months, from the egg phase until an advanced phase of tadpole prior to metamorphosis. Measurements of electric field intensity (radiofrequencies and microwaves) in V/m obt...

Effects of prolactin and growth hormone on growth and metamorphosis of tadpoles of the frog, Rana pipiens.

Mammalian prolactin at doses of l-50 pg/day promoted growth (increased wet weight, dry weight and body length) in Rana pipiens tadpoles. Mammalian growth hormone (GH) promoted growth only at the higher doses (50 pg/day and above) and was not so effective as prolactin. Prolactin also inhibited metamorphosis (at doses of 5 pg/day and above). Inhibition of metamorphosis did not appear to be due to...

Spontaneous heterosis in larval life-history traits of hemiclonal frog hybrids.

European water frog hybrids Rana esculenta (Rana ridibunda x Rana lessonae) reproduce hemiclonally, transmitting only their ridibunda genome to gametes. We compared fitness-related larval life-history traits of natural R. esculenta from Poland with those of the two sympatric parental species and of newly generated F1 hybrids. Compared with either parental species, F1 hybrid offspring had higher...
